Makati City has declared a state of climate emergency and appealed to businesses, communities, and stakeholders to join in the movement to combat climate change, CNN Philippines<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the city mayor Abby Binay, low-lying coastal areas in cities like Makati have been more vulnerable to strong typhoons because of rising temperatures and sea levels. These disasters cause flash floods and landslides, which disrupt public services and displace families and communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Philstar<\/a> report, the top local chief executive mentioned data from PAGASA, showing that the country has had a 0.75 degree-celsius annual increase in temperature over the past 70 years. The temperature is expected to rise further in the next years, reaching an annual 1.8 degrees celsius increase by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Binay acknowledged the urgency of climate action and urged Makatizens and global citizens to \u201ctake care of the city and ensure that it remains a livable place for future generations.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Makati\u2019s Climate Action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Part of Makati City\u2019s efforts to combat climate change is enacting environment-focused ordinances, namely the Solid Waste Management Code, Makati Green Building Code, Anti-Smoke Belching Ordinance, and the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Ordinance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city banned plastics in households and business establishments. Cigarette smoking was also prohibited in public places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To further reduce energy use, the local government will acquire electric vehicles and install solar panels in government offices and public schools. Aside from cutting down emissions, this will help city officials deliver uninterrupted services during disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extending the green efforts further, Makati is set to revamp its public transportation system. In 2024, the government will deploy around 30 to 50 electric buses in the city, in a bid to make transportation green and smart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city government signed a memorandum of agreement with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) for the green transportation project last August 3, 2022. The P724-million initiative involves setting up a public transportation information and communications technology system, running a pilot operation of an electric vehicle (EV) bus service, building an EV bus terminal, and training officials and personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Binay said that the project will reduce greenhouse emissions while offering an affordable means of transportation for the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside from EVs, the country\u2019s financial capital will soon see the development of its own subway system. As mentioned in this Business World<\/a> report, Binay said that the railway project will reduce around 270,000 vehicles on the road by 2048, thereby bringing down the city\u2019s carbon dioxide emissions by 2.3 million tons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Makati Subway is expected to be completed by 2025. Operating 18 hours a day, it will accommodate about 700,000 passengers every day. In the\u00a0initial plan, the railway project will connect key areas in the city, namely the Central Business District at the corner of Ayala and Sen. Gil Puyat Avenues, Circuit City, Makati City Hall, Century City-Rockwell Center, University of Makati, and Ospital ng Makati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Need for Green Infrastructure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Makati\u2019s focus on green transportation is notable, as the Department of Energy said that the transportation sector drives the dramatic spike in the country\u2019s carbon emissions, as cited in this Manila Bulletin<\/a> report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Philippine Energy Plan (PEP) showed that \u201cemission from oil-based fuels, primarily consumed in the transport sector, puts in 47-percent share,\u201d which is projected onward to 2040.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The share of the transport industry in carbon emissions will be higher compared to the 35.3-percent emissions contribution estimated from the coal-fired power facilities through the year 2040.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initiatives tackling this issue include the passing of the\u00a0Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA)\u00a0law.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among other things, the legislation mandates the creation of a Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry (CREVI), a national development plan for the EV industry. The plan outlines strategies for fast-tracking the development, commercialization, and utilization of EVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Green infrastructure in the transportation industry is seen to influence developments and trends in the property sector. Some modern residential, commercial, and retail developments now have amenities designed for EVs, namely parking spaces and charging stations. The industrial property sector, on the other hand, has seen factories and logistic hubs hosting EV manufacturing operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
